Broken

So oft we see a troubled face
Belie a broken soul –
Yet think we not what wordless phrase
Hath wrought so great a toll?

Not righteous anger, hellish bliss
To wrack so fine a mind!
But reason then, that many miss
In broken hearts we find.

‘Tis a weighty truth of broken trust
That strikes the hearts of men:
Uncanny chill that armor rusts
And crippled conscience dents.

Splitting spirits, carving dams
Where broken friendships flow,
This shattered trust a fire fans,
An envy always bold.

But think, how then – a spark as this
To cause so great a drought?
Unveil we not that misplaced kiss,
That broken word we flout?

Search us then our broken minds,
Where thoughtless dreams infest;
Lock them to their safe confines,
Let trust withstand time’s test.
