Pare.

Dear readers,

it's a holiday eve - and theokwek puts up another poem, as the title suggests, a study in superficiality. enjoy! He wrote another one too, but that is preferably not for sharing.

I know not.

A Study in Superficiality

Sometimes
as we quarter pears for the dining-table
we make the philosopher in us wonder
why we settle for the flesh
and not the seed
when ultimately the seed is the purpose of the flesh.

And so it is
in many things
as the knife-edge of our actions
– basking in reflected glory –
meets white skin,
like a diver slicing water,
or a sunbeam treading sky,

we fail to ponder
(or we ponder, but fail to understand)
why it is that we whittle men down to their
yolks, and then only weigh the
albumen wrapping that is.

Perhaps this is why men,
of all creatures,
bear the creases of age
around harried eyes –
‘tis where they have been carved.

Is it only when
we put men into furnaces
that we realize what
true dross is?
